The 2022 World Cup, which was held in Qatar, was the most expensive World Cup ever, with more than $200 billion invested to make it successful. The atmosphere around the entire World Cup in Qatar, and especially the final, made the event worthwhile for the money invested in it.

Given that the nation has been accused of corruption and bribery, as well as receiving criticism for its exploitative treatment of migrant workers and less-than-progressive views on LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, the decision to choose Qatar as the host of the 2022 World Cup has proven to be contentious for some.

But with all the cash that you saw being pumped into this year’s world cup, you might be wondering what the winning team is going home with.

The $440 million cash prize for the 2022 World Cup is the highest ever allotted for a World Cup.

Every team out of the 32 nations who participated will receive a handsome payout from FIFA; but the most attractive payout will obviously go the two teams that made it to the finals; France and Argentina.

Ordinarily, each of the 32 participating teams receives a portion of the overall prize money but the amount will be dependent on performance and advancement at the tournament so even the teams that are knocked out in the group stage will receive a portion. The winning team, Argentina will be given $42 million, which is $4 million more than France received for winning the 2018 World Cup.

Consequently, the remaining $404 million must be distributed among the remaining 31 participating teams.

The third-place team will receive $27 million, the second-place team will get $30 million, and the fourth-place team will get $25 million. The eight teams that lost in the Round of 16 each receive $13 million, while the four defeated quarter-finalists each receive $17 million. No matter how many points they earned in their three games, the 16 other countries who did not go through the World Cup’s group stage receive $9 million.
