The mere thought of the word “husband” made me smile beyond the lips’ capacity to stretch. Finally, I was married to one of the finest men, just six months after meeting him when Joey broke my heart. “Now who’s married?”, I sarcastically quizzed myself. It was my honeymoon and ‘Joey-thoughts’ had to be pushed to the darkest side of my mind. Yes, where they belonged. I’m going to make the most of my new life now. After all, I married into a rich family. What could go wrong?

I got to know what could go wrong just the next morning. My husband woke me up as early as 4 am to get ready for home. I got confused. “Get ready for which home?”, I asked. “I thought you said we’re spending a week of honeymoon before going back”. Winston breathed in deeply and out and repeated in a slow tone, “Get up and pack, we are going home.” It did the trick. I knew better than to argue back.

On the way home, I felt aggrieved. This is not how I planned my honeymoon. I started thinking of how to complain bitterly to my new mother-in-law. At least she’s a mother. She’ll understand me well. We got home and dropped the bags in the hall. He didn’t say anything and went straight to bed to continue his sleep. I was lost. “What is happening?”, I asked myself. I could not tell. I called my mother-in-law to rant about how my husband wants to stress my life on the first day of marriage. The call went through.

“Hello mummy”

“Yes, who’s speaking?”

“Oh Mummy, you don’t know the number? It’s me Velma.”

“Oh okay. How can I help you?” She said sharply. I got more lost. Perhaps she doesn’t know which Velma it was. The mother-in-law I knew was very quiet, just like her son. What changed?

“Young lady, if you have nothing to say, I have better things to attend to”. And that was how the call ended with me standing in the middle of the hall with my mouth, wide open. The next minute, Winston was beside me. He held me and helped me sit down. Finally, someone came back to his senses.

He sat me down and kissed my neck all the way to my ear and whispered, “Baby”. I felt sweet chills down my spine. “This is the last time you’d call my mother to disturb her”, he added. Surprised, I turned immediately to look at him. His eyes looked devilish. I realised Winston wasn’t on my side. I made a leap to the door as he simultaneously tore my top into two and looked at my body like a lunatic ready to devour. “Who did I marry?!”

  1. I felt for the lady, when the mother-in-law replied, “Yes, who’s speaking?”
