A powerful earthquake has struck southern Turkey, causing further damage to buildings in the region just weeks after a deadly quake.

The tremor, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale, occurred in the evening, and witnesses have reported that there is new damage to structures in Antakya.

While there are reports of people being trapped under rubble, the Turkish vice president has confirmed that eight people have been injured so far. This latest quake is one of over 6,000 aftershocks that have been recorded since the February 6 quake, which killed more than 44,000 people.

The impact of today’s tremor has been felt as far away as Syria, Egypt, and Lebanon, and rescue teams are working to get to the worst-affected areas where buildings have collapsed.

The situation on the ground is one of fear and panic, with small aftershocks continuing to occur and deep cracks in roads making it more challenging for emergency services to reach those in need.
