Former President John Mahama claims that purchasing tractors for farmers during his administration was a mistake.
According to Mr. Mahama, his government ought to have hired a professional to work on the tractors instead of putting them in a pool and giving them to the farmers.
Speaking over the weekend in Munich, the former president claimed that a tractor is not what a farmer needs, but rather its services.
“I realised some of the things that we did, we made mistakes, we imported tractors and agricultural equipment, and we gave it to farmers.
The farmer does not need the tractor, he does not need the agricultural equipment, he needs the services of a tractor,” he said.
He said he’d have done things in a different way if he had another chance.
“So somebody who knows how to maintain that tractor must have a service centre, where he provides the services to the farmer.
But once we provided the tractors to the farmers, within a year or two, the tractor would break down because the farmer didn’t know that it was necessary to grease the tractor, change the engine oil, and replace the filters every six months. Hence, we’ll take a different strategy.
In order to attend the 59th Munich Security Conference 2023 which entails high-level discussions “on key foreign and security policy challenges”, former president Mahama is currently in Munich, Germany.
The Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa is chaired by Mr. Mahama.
On Saturday, the Tana Forum sponsored a side event, an MSC Regional Breakfast, in partnership with Bundesverband der Deutschen Industry e.V. (BDI), with the theme “Africa’s Place in a Multipolar World: Moving from Strategy to Action.”
President Mahama, who is also the chair of the Tana Forum, declared the session open. Ambassador Christoph Heusgen, the chairman of the Munich Security Conference, and Wolfgang Niedermark of the Federation of German Industries also spoke.
Thandi Modise, South Africa’s defense minister, gave the opening comments.
