The planned operation to disable all unregistered SIM cards starting on Saturday, October 1, 2022, has been postponed.
This will give the Ministry of Communication and Digitalization time to review the anticipated exercise’s road map.
A trustworthy source with knowledge of the SIM registration procedure told Graphic Online that a new date and the details will be announced early the next week, but they also noted that the punitive measures from earlier in September would be put into place once more.
The NCA met with the telcos on Friday morning to finalize the details, and all indicated their willingness to proceed with the exercise to block the unregistered SIMs as of the deadline’s expiration on Friday, September 30, 2022.
People who have completed stage one of their registration—linking their Ghana Cards to their SIM cards via *404#—have till the end of the year [2022] to finish stage two.
Once more, those who have not registered their SIMs at all will be prohibited from doing things like making or receiving calls, using data services, and more.
However, it was said that such users would be able to dial *404# to begin their registration and would also be able to get their special codes by SMS.
According to the statement, subscribers for Telesol, Busy, and Surfline, which are included in the category of Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) providers, started registering late. As a result, they would be allowed more time to finish registering their clients.
It reaffirmed that the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization, the policy maker, had received the roadmap post-deadline from the industry regulator for a final approval to implement.
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) plenipotentiary meeting is taking place in Bucharest, Romania, and Graphic Online can confirm that the sector minister is in charge of a Ghanaian team there. Ghana is competing to keep its seat on the ITU Council.
