The National Cathedral project was proposed by the government in March 2017 as a physical embodiment of national unity, harmony, and spirituality. The $350-million inter-denominational cathedral will have an auditorium capable of seating 5,000 people, as well as chapels, and a baptistery.

There have been mixed feelings amongst Ghanaians about the whole National Cathedral saga. While some prominent people like the Asantehene and other religious organizations have lauded the idea of the National Cathedral, many Ghanaians are of diverse opinions.

The matter continues to raise apprehension among Ghanaians as the government has granted the release of GH¢25 million to the National Cathedral secretariat as additional capital for the construction of the National Cathedral. Hitherto, the government had indicated that the National Cathedral project will be largely funded by donations from the Christian community.

Ghanaians are very much concerned about their taxes which will fund this project and which may not benefit them. Are there no longer enough churches in the country where we can pray? What about the independence square and other national parks which can be used to serve a similar purpose?

This decision by the government comes off as insensitive considering the numerous challenges that Ghanaians are currently facing in the country: the unemployment rate, inflation, lack of educational and healthcare facilities in some communities, non-payment of allowances, poor feeding of school children, and many others.

Ghanaians deserve better use of their taxes. The government should be held more accountable for the taxpayers’ monies. We need developmental projects in the country and not just some “show off” of religion. If indeed the construction of the National Cathedral is a fulfillment of the president’s promise to God, then he should at least first fulfill his promises to Ghanaians.

We want to see the Agenda 111 hospitals project, One District One Factory Initiative, and the many more promises made to Ghanaians. These, I believe will be more acceptable in the sight of God.
