This menace of police brutality in the country in recent times is becoming overwhelming and I am wondering what kind of police service we have in our country today. It is even more surprising that after all the numerous cases of police brutality recorded across the country, the police service has not been called to order.

Is the Inspector General of Police looking on as his men dehumanize innocent citizens, or do they have his approval to do so? I cannot even begin to count the many of such cases because it is really beginning to infuriate me.

Recently, we recorded the Kumasi Islamic SHS shootings which left over 30 students injured as a result of police assaults on students who were protesting over the incessant pedestrian collisions involving school children and teachers.

What is Happening Now

Barely a month after that, the management of Ideal College has reported that several land guards and police officers have brutalized and injured 23 students of the school.

Naphtali Kyei Baffour, the school’s public relations officer, in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM said that three of the students were severely wounded, while the other 20 had minor injuries. He further explained that the majority of the female students were terrified and that they had talked to them in an attempt to calm them.

He however indicated that things were under control.

He explained that on a portion of the school’s property, some land guards and police officers had attempted to tear down buildings the school had erected, and the students had attempted to prevent them.

The police officers and land guards attacked them violently in an effort to stop the demolition, inflicting injuries on the students in the process.

Mr. Kyei Baffour further stated that the land guards were travelling with individuals in uniform who identified themselves as belonging to the counterterrorism team and arrived in a GV-registered vehicle. They attempted to demolish the structure that had been put up by the school on the land.

The land in question was to be used to build an assembly hall and hostels for the students. The school had already put up the foundation for the assembly hall, indicating that they had been granted permission by the assembly for the construction.

He also indicated that it was not the first time that land guards have tried to pull down structures on the school’s lands.

This is Unacceptable

The conduct of the Ghana Police Service is appalling and barbaric. We cannot continue to look on unperturbed, we must take necessary actions as citizens to express our displeasure concerning the recent phenomenon of police brutality in our country.

Police brutality must end and it must END NOW!
