Former President John Mahama has attributed the economic problems of the nation to Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

He claims that the President’s apparent inability to oust Mr. Ofori-Atta from his position is aggravating the situation. Mr. Mahama bemoaned that the Finance Minister relied on his Databank employees and disregarded the guidance of seasoned professionals at the Finance Ministry, which is why we find ourselves in this economic mess as a country.

According to him, the Finance Minister has been given the green light to run down the country’s economy. He also mentioned that the so-called “solid Economic Management Team” had failed to discipline Mr. Ofori-Atta when he went on a reckless borrowing spree over the course of several years.

At a lecture on the economy which was given on Thursday on the theme “Building The Ghana We Want”, he emphasized that the sector minister’s inefficiency and the failure of the entire Akufo-Addo administration have led to the depreciation of the Cedi and the other economic challenges in the country.

He stated categorically that the NDC would not have dared to handle the public purse and the nation’s resources in such a careless manner that the NPP has done, adding that society would not have allowed them to do so. He reiterated that even though they faced some challenges during their administration, they would not have acted recklessly or done some of the things the current administration has done, even if society allowed it. He described the current economic situation in the country as a total catastrophe.

Ghanaians are overwhelmingly disappointed in the government for the turn of events in the country amidst increasing economic challenges. None is oblivious to the hardship induced by the Akuffo-led administration. Prices of commodities are shooting up daily and a sachet of water is expected to soon sell at 0. 60 Ghana pesewas.

In response to the difficulties Ghanaians are experiencing, Mr. Mahama assured that the subsequent NDC administration will use intelligent economic reforms and policies to deliver Ghana from its current deplorable state. In addition, he urged the present administration to take economic recovery measures, such as reducing the number of government appointments.
