According to the 2022 Global Peace Index, Ghana is once again placed as the second-most peaceful nation in Sub-Saharan Africa (GPI).

The Gambia, Botswana, and the remaining 39 African nations are listed after Ghana in order of ranking, which is behind Mauritius.

Ghana, however, dropped in its global ranking as the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), an independent, non-partisan, non-profit think tank dedicated to refocusing the world’s attention on peace as a positive, attainable, and tangible measure of human well-being and progress, ranked the country as the 40th most peaceful nation in the world as opposed to its 38th position in the index published last year.

Ghana has slightly improved its overall score from the previous year’s rankings, which also ranked it as the second-most peaceful African nation.

Ghanaians have been asked to keep up efforts to keep the nation peaceful.

Ghana Now

The government of Ghana has requested an economic rescue program from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as a result of the country’s present economic crisis. The government attributes Ghana’s current economic situation in part to the COVID-19 outbreak and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Conflicts between demonstrators and the police have been one of Ghana’s security issues in recent months; the most recent of these being the conflict between the Arise Ghana protestors and the police in late June of this year.

To make matters worse, there is a growing danger of terrorist acts being imported from the Sahel region, made more so by previous assaults in nearby nations.

After the murder of a bullion van police escort and a hawker in Jamestown, as well as a string of robberies across the nation, many individuals expressed significant concerns about increased insecurity.

International Updates

Since 2008, Iceland has maintained its title as the world’s most peaceful nation.

In second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh place, respectively, are Slovenia, followed by New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark, Austria, Ireland, and Portugal.

The least peaceful nations are Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, Russia, and South Sudan. Europe accounts for seven of the top 10 GPI nations, with Turkey being the only member state outside the top half of the index.

About The GPI Report

The GPI, created by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), is the most often used indicator of world peace.

The GPI assesses the level of peace across three domains: the magnitude of ongoing domestic and international conflict, the degree of militarization, and includes 99.7% of the world’s population. It does this by employing 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly regarded sources.

Results from the previous year indicate that, in contrast to this year’s record-low 0.03 percent, the average level of world peace decreased by 0.07 percent last year.

This is the eleventh decline in peace in the past fourteen years, showing that nations typically deteriorate considerably more quickly than they improve. Of the 71 countries that had declines in peace, only two remained steady.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused a dramatic decline in deaths from overseas conflicts.
