John Peter Amewu, the Minister for Railways Development, shared insights into the incident which occurred on the Tema-Mpakadan railway route. It was Thursday, April 18, 2024, a date marked by what was supposed to be a routine assessment of the train’s operational readiness. Instead, it turned into a day of critical learning and unexpected challenges.
The accident happened at approximately 12:15 PM. The train, moving towards its 98-kilometer mark on its inaugural journey from Tema, collided with a stationary Kia truck that was inappropriately parked on the railway track near kilometer 76. The driver, upon sighting the obstacle, attempted an emergency stop but the proximity left no room for a complete halt, leading to the collision.
Minister Amewu detailed the incident on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, explaining that despite the immediate concerns, the situation was swiftly managed. The impact resulted in damage to the train’s front end, but thankfully, it did not compromise the vehicle’s engine or electrical systems.
What is particularly notable—and fortunate—is that there were no injuries among the passengers and inspectors aboard. The train has since been returned to the workshop, where engineers, including the Polish team responsible for its assembly, are diligently working to restore it to its pre-accident condition.
