The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, has refuted claims that Russia’s assault on Ukraine is mostly to blame for Ghana’s current economic crisis.
In his remarks before the Committee regarding the vote of censure against the Finance Minister, Tamale South MP Ken Ofori Atta claimed that the problems facing Ghana are due to the Finance Minister’s “reckless borrowing” and “reckless expenditure.”
Mr. Iddrisu questioned, “Did you borrow to support the war in Ukraine,” contending that Ofori-Atta’s carelessness was to blame for Ghana’s economic problems.
He made the comments in reaction to K.T. Hammond, the co-chairman of the Committee, who had said that Mr. Ofori-Atta was not solely to blame for the nation’s financial predicament.
Tuesday morning’s public hearing of the committee on the proposal to censure Mr. Ofori Atta got off to a bad start due to disagreements between majority and minority committee members over how to submit evidence.
The minority leaders, Haruna Iddrisu and Cassiel Ato Forson, who were the first to appear before the committee, wanted to submit evidence before being sworn in, but the chairman, KT Hammond, and other members of the majority objected.
