US Senator Chuck Schumer stated that a plan to outlaw TikTok in the US “should be looked at.”

“We do know there’s Chinese ownership of the company that owns TikTok. And there are some people in the Commerce Committee that are looking into that right now,” Schumer, the Senate majority leader, told George Stephanopoulos of ABC News in a Sunday interview. “We’ll see where they come out.”

Republican senator from Florida Marco Rubio and independent senator from Maine Angus King said on Friday that they have presented new legislation that would forbid TikTok from functioning in the US unless it severed relations with its existing owner.

According to a statement from a House committee, the CEO of TikTok, Singaporean Shou Zi Chew, will appear before Congress in March about issues such as TikTok’s privacy and data security policies, its effects on teenage users, and its “link to the Chinese Communist Party.”

In the past, the company has stated that it appreciates the chance to clear the air on TikTok, ByteDance, and the promises they were making.

“We hope that by sharing details of our comprehensive plans with the full Committee, Congress can take a more deliberative approach to the issues at hand,” the TikTok
