The Ghana Union of Traders Association’s (GUTA) industrial strike has been called off.
On Wednesday, October 19, association members announced a walkout in opposition to the deteriorating economic climate.
The GUTA termed the strike as a “pinch” on the government to immediately address the weakening cedi, the high interest rate, and inflation. The strike was scheduled to finish on Monday, October 24.
However, the General Secretary of GUTA, Alpha A. Shaban, announced a suspension of the strike in a press release dated October 20.
The decision, according to the press release, was made after a meeting with Mantse Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the King of the Ga State, who committed to raise the issue with the relevant authorities in order to find a quick resolution.
The press release further stated that the leadership had the chance to meet with President Nana Akufo-Addo and provide him with their complaints and suggestions.
“He [the President] then called for setting up of a working committee made up of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, National Security and GUTA, to swiftly come out with pragmatic measures to solve the challenges,” the statement assured.
As a result, it is anticipated that all GUTA members will reopen their stores for business today, October 21, 2022.
