After losing 2-0 to Ecuador on Sunday at the Al Bayt Stadium, Qatar made history as the only host nation to lose the first game of a World Cup.
As soon as the game started, Enner Valencia’s goal for the Maroons—who were competing in their first-ever World Cup—made clear their inexperience and lack of talent.
After being fouled by goalie Saad Al Sheeb, Ecuador’s captain Valencia won a penalties and converted it superbly to score the game’s first goal 13 minutes later.
After 31 minutes, the South Americans doubled their advantage. Valencia once more
In the 31st minute, a perfect lofted pass into the box by Angelo Preciado led to the second goal, which was headed in by the Fenerbahçe striker.
Ecuador won 2-0 in the opening period.
With Qatar also having some strong stretches in the game during the second half, Ecuador appeared to have eased their foot off the throttle a little.
With three points more than tomorrow’s match between Senegal and the Netherlands, Ecuador is currently in first place in Group A.
