Veteran Nollywood actress Joke Silva says caring for her husband Olu Jacobs, who has been suffering from dementia since 2021, has been a difficult journey.
Silva said Jacobs’ diagnosis has been hard on both of them, though she remains committed to supporting him through his illness.
A Progressive Decline
Silva feels like the man she married is no longer there, saying “80% of the time, the person I married is gone”.
Dementia is a progressive brain disorder that impacts memory, thinking and behaviour. There is no cure, but treatments can help manage symptoms.
A Different Kind of Love
Despite the challenges, Silva says she still loves her husband and intends to stay by his side. She now cares for Jacobs like a father, as she loves him “differently”.
An Admired Marriage
Though their marriage of 37 years (and 42-year relationship) is admired in Nollywood, Silva says caring for Jacobs with dementia has been a difficult adjustment.
Silva describes Jacobs as an “amazing” father, husband and friend before his illness.
