The Amenfi West Municipality in the Western Region’s Nimri Tano Forest Reserve is home to Akonta Mining Limited, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has ordered the Forestry Commission to immediately cease all operations there.

While the mining business has a lease to conduct mining activities in some areas of Samreboi, according to a statement from the ministry, the company has no mineral rights to conduct any mining operations in the Tano Nimiri forest reserve.

“Records available to the Ministry show that while Akonta Mining Ltd has a mining lease to undertake mining operations in some parts of Samreboi, outside the Forest Reserve, the company has no mineral right to undertake any mining operations in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.”

According to the Ministry’s records, Akonta Mining Ltd. applied for a mining lease to conduct operations in the aforementioned Forest Reserve on August 25, 2022.

“By a Ministerial Directive, all reconnaissance, prospecting, and/or exploratory activities in Forest Reserves in the country are suspended, except in exceptional circumstances. Although this directive does not affect mining in Forest Reserves, Akonta Mining Limited’s application has not been determined.”

It declared that the company’s actions in the Forest Reserve are completely prohibited.

The Forestry Commission was additionally instructed by the Lands Minister to guarantee that the corporation does not conduct any operations in the forest and to take appropriate legal action against anyone found to be at fault in the situation.

“The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources remains committed to the fight against illegal mining, with integrity and transparency, and assures the general public that it will continue to work with the relevant agencies and all stakeholders to come to grips with this age-old galamsey menace,” the statement added.
