As the time for the election of the presidential candidates for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) draws near, the heat is on as everyone is cheering for their favourite. Among the contestants who has shown interest are three great pillars of the NPP. They are Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Hon. Alan Kyerematen, and Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong. These are men with many hats. We are going to talk about these three members of the party who are vying to become the presidential candidate for the ruling party.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s professional career has been an impressive one. After graduating from the University of Ghana, Legon with a BSc degree in Economics and Statistics, he went on to gain an MPhil in Monetary and Financial Economics from the same university. From 1997 to 2000, he served as an economist at the Research Department of the Bank of Ghana. He then moved to the United Kingdom to pursue a Ph.D. in Development Economics from the University of Buckingham.
After returning to Ghana in 2001, Dr. Bawumia began his journey as an independent economic consultant and was subsequently employed as a Senior Economist at Databank Financial Services Limited. In addition, he also served as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School.
He was the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana until his appointment in 2008. During this period, he contributed to several important monetary policy decisions, including those related to exchange rate policy and inflation targeting.
In 2008, he was elected as the running mate of then-presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo and won the elections after contesting three times. In 2016, Dr. Bawumia became the 5th Vice President of Ghana in the Fourth Republic. As Vice President, he has continued to play a key role in formulating policies that are aimed at transforming Ghana’s economy. He has also established several initiatives to tackle poverty, improve education and create jobs in the country.
Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen (popularly called Alan Cash) is a Ghanaian politician, corporate executive, diplomat, and international public servant. In 2007, Kyerematen ran for the New Patriotic Party’s leadership but got 32.3% of the vote. He came in second place behind Nana Akufo-Addo, who received 47.96% of the vote. In 2010, Mr. Kyerematen made a second run for the Party’s top job. Nana Akufo-Addo won the Primaries, and Mr. Kyerematen finished in second place.
Under President Kufuor’s NPP administration, Kyerematen served as Ghana’s ambassador to the United States and later as minister of trade, industry, private sector development, and presidential special initiatives. Mr. Kyerematen worked as a trade counsellor for the Ethiopian capital of Addis Abeba’s UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen served as Minister for Trade and Industry from 2017 to 2023. He recently presented his resignation letter to the president to enable him to contest the upcoming NPP presidential elections.
Kyerematen was the Ambassador of Ghana to the United States and later Minister of Trade, Industry, Private Sector Development (PSD), and the Presidential Special Initiatives (PSI), under the President Kufuor-led NPP government. Over the course of more than 24 years, Alan John Kyerematen has had a long and fruitful professional career in both the public and commercial sectors. He was a top corporate executive with a Unilever International subsidiary in Ghana when, at the age of 22, he was promoted to junior manager.
Kennedy Agyapong is a politician and a business tycoon born t. Francis Ohene Kofi Agyapong, one of three eminent Ghanaian judges who were kidnapped and killed in the early days of Ghana’s Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), and Mrs. Mary Nsiah. He attended Adisadel College in Ghana’s Central Region, has a GCE A-Level, and went to Fordham University in New York, USA to further his education. He is a politician and is considered as one of the richest people in Ghana. Apart from being a politician, he is also a businessman; he is the Member of Parliament in charge of Assin Central.
He began his career in 2000 as the Member of Parliament for Assin North and retained his seat for this area twice in 2004 and 2008. He became the new Member of Parliament for Assin Central in 2012 and was re-elected in 2016. He is still the MP for Assin Central. The wealthy, outspoken, “no-nonsense” politician owns a number of companies which include; Oman F.M, Ash F.M, Net 2 TV, Super Care Company Limited (Air Conditioners Dealer), Mina D’oro Ventures, M/S Imperial World Business Limited, Gold Coin Communication.
