Over 20 students from Kumasi’s Islamic Senior High School (SHS) have been injured and reportedly rushed to the hospital after police allegedly opened fire to disperse a crowd of them.
The officers were sent to the school, according to sources, to keep an ongoing protest under control but the clash was prompted by a confrontation between the police and the students.
According to reports, the victims were members of a group of students who protested pedestrian collisions involving school children and teachers by blocking the Abrepo Junction-Barekese road.
The angry students had requested that speed rumps be built on that section of road. Reports further indicate there was vehicular and human traffic on that stretch for more than an hour before the Police were called in to clear the road.
In an interview with Joy News, a spokesperson for the Education Ministry, Eric Opoku Mensah, stated that the Regional Director of Education is looking into the incident to guarantee that all students taken to the hospital are adequately cared for and safe.
“We’ve spoken to parents to remain calm; we have given them the assurance that any student found in this School is well. We are protecting them; we are ensuring that those that were taken to the hospital are safe”, he said.
Meanwhile, academic activities in the school have halted as parents rush in to check on their children.
