Poland has announced its decision to provide Ukraine with four MiG-29 fighter jets, making it the first NATO country to do so.
Polish President Andrzej Duda shared the news during a press conference held in Warsaw, where he also discussed his meeting with newly-sworn in Czech President Petr Pavel. Duda confirmed that Poland has a dozen functional MiGs obtained in the 90s from the former German Democratic Republic and are still being used for the country’s air defence.
While the planes are at the end of their operational life, they are still functional, and the remaining machines are being serviced and prepared for handover.
The Polish president added that the country plans to replace them with deliveries of South Korean FA-50s and American F-35s. President Duda stated that Poland and the Czech Republic are among the leading nations supporting Ukraine at humanitarian and military levels.
