The Sim Card Registration Exercise ends today, Friday, September 30, 2022, after another extension was given from the initial deadline of July 31st, 2022. For defaulters, several sanctions have already been issued by the Communications and Digitalization Ministry, some of which took effect on September 5.

Those who fail to re-register their sim cards will face the danger of having their cards deactivated, with the numbers perhaps being reassigned if the subscribers do not re-register the cards within six months of the deactivation. Many Ghanaians who still haven’t been able to re-register their sim cards have expressed their frustrations about the issue.

Why Have Some People Still Not Registered Their Cards After Several Extensions?

It is not a deliberate attempt by Ghanaians to refuse to re-register their sim cards. Sim card registration has several benefits such as tracing sim card owners, curbing phone theft, hate texting, mobile fraud, and Sim Box fraud, as well as tracking criminals who use phones for illegal purposes. Additionally, they are supposed to aid in the identification of users of value-added services like mobile banking, mobile money, and electronic payment systems.

However, not all Ghanaians have successfully obtained their Ghana Cards, preventing them from reregistering their sim cards. Some interested parties claim that the action is a violation of the rights of Ghanaians. Several customers gathered in large groups on the premises of telecom companies to voice their concerns about the government’s punitive measures.

The National Identification Authority (NIA), however, has acknowledged the difficulties in registering qualified individuals in time for the deadline for the SIM card re-registration. There are still about two million people aged 15 and over who need to be registered said the NIA Executive Secretary, Prof. Kenneth Attafuah,

A group has therefore sued the National Communications Authority (NCA), requesting that the Supreme Court declare the registration deadline and the related sanctions for failure to register null and void. The punitive sanctions, it claimed, violate the constitution.

The government of Ghana and the National Communications Authority must deal more leniently with Ghanaians and show some compassion since the issue of non-registration does not lie entirely on the sim card subscribers.
