The National Cathedral project has made several raves in the media and has garnered diversified opinions from several citizens across the country. Indeed, it is a matter of interest for Ghanaians as we have the right to know how our taxes are being utilized by the government.

Captain Joel Sowu (Rtd) has pronounced the National Cathedral project as an error and an affront to God and has urged President Akufo–Addo to render an apology to Ghanaians for imposing a personal promise to God on the country. Are these words too harsh? Let’s see why he says this. The retiree expressed worry about the various debates that have surrounded the project. He mentioned amongst them the use of state funds, seized rosewood, and supposed company breaches.

He requested that after the admission of guilt has been made by the president, he should also seek the backing of supporters to help achieve his promise to God. Captain Sowu (Rtd) was speaking in an interview with TV3 on August 31, 2022, and admonished that a truly God-fearing person will easily acknowledge his faults and added it was a sign of strength to do so and not weakness.

Do you share the same sentiments as Captain Joel Sowu (Rtd)? Should the Cathedral project be continued or it should be called off completely by the President?

Meanwhile, the National Cathedral Secretariat has lately confirmed that the project had been put on hold owing to the inadequacy of funds after North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto alleged that work had been stalled on the cathedral.

Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah, Executive Director of the national cathedral has however noted that the successful completion of the cathedral relies heavily on the support of Ghanaians. As of June 2022, a total of GHS 2 million has been received from Ghanaian churches as donations towards the National Cathedral project. Some of these churches include Perez Chapel International Church, Church of Pentecost Headquarters, The Methodist Church of Ghana, and Action Chapel International.

Do you think that the National Cathedral project is worth any more support from Ghanaian churches or other individuals or organizations? Perhaps the president should have counted the cost before embarking on this “promise” project.
