John Agyekum Kufuor, the former president, rejected allegations that he intended to meet with NPP lawmakers who are pushing for Ken Ofori-Atta, the finance minister, to be fired.
The previous head of state claims that the reported information in some media outlets is erroneous and should be disregarded.
Dr. Kwabena Osei-Adubofour, the former President’s senior assistant and spokesperson, reiterated in a statement released on Thursday from his office that the charges are false and that he will not be taken into “petty politics.”
“The Office of Former President John Kufuor has chanced upon some publications in the media, both social and traditional media, to the effect that the former President has extended an invitation for a meeting with him to the almost a hundred NPP members of Parliament who are demanding the sack of the finance minister, ostensibly to dissuade them from their stance.
We wish to bring to the attention of the general public that there is no truth to the said publications”, the statement emphasized.
The statement continued, “The office of the former President vehemently detests the developing trend in disinformation that mischievously seeks to draw President Kufuor into issues that he has not commented on”.
It added, “The former President is as concerned as, perhaps more so than, others for the wellbeing and stability of Ghana, and in his own way is doing whatever he can for the nation to get on top of the seemingly intractable difficulties currently engulfing our society, and would be the last person to play petty and uninformed politics in the circumstances”.
“At any time that Mr. Kufuor deems it fit to comment publicly on national issues, he would not hesitate to do so. But, he would definitely not be drawn in, on other people’s terms and agenda”, the statement concluded.
Ken Ofori-Atta, the finance minister, is currently answering inquiries from an eight-person ad hoc committee of Parliament that is looking into a resolution of censure against him.
He is being asked to be sacked by the motion, which was submitted by the minority MPs on October 25.
The Minister is unfit to hold office, according to the Minority MPs, because he failed to perform his obligations.
In a related development, lawmakers from the government’s New Patriotic Party (MP) have stated they are prepared to skip the budget presentation in 2023 if Ken Ofori-Atta is still in office.
They contend, like their NDC colleagues, that the Finance Minister is to blame for the nation’s economic predicament and must be removed from office.
President Akufo-Addo, who made the appointment, claims he is content with Mr. Ofori-work Atta’s and has no reason to fire him.
The President and other important members of the ruling party have started fighting as a result of this.
In the middle of the controversy, Mr. Ofori-Atta is scheduled to appear before the eight-person ad hoc committee tomorrow, November 18.
It is unclear, though, whether he will appear before the Committee in person or through his attorney, Gabby Otchere-Darko, who spoke on his behalf when the proceedings got underway on Monday.
