The purpose of Founders’ Day, celebrated on the 4th of August every year, is to recognize the contributions of all individuals, particularly those who led the fight for Ghana’s independence. Founders’ Day was previously known as “Founder’s Day” and was celebrated to commemorate Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah for his achievements towards gaining independence in 1957.

Mr. Ezekiel Kwesi Akyin Biney, a senior citizen, claimed that Kwame Nkrumah never had a home, not even when he served as president of Ghana from July 1, 1960, to February 24, 1966. Mr. Akyin Biney’s father served in the post-colonial era, in Nkrumah’s administration.

He stated in an interview with KMJ on the Prime Morning show on Wednesday, that, unlike the current Ghanaian leaders we have, the nation’s founders and past leaders had the interests of the people at heart and committed themselves to serving with respect and diligence. He added that they were self-sacrificing and never looked to their interests.

Additionally, he asserted that the nation needs compassionate leaders who put the needs of the people ahead of their interests since God will not grant those who love financial possessions the wisdom to act morally. Mr. Akyin Biney also implored the government to amend the educational system and teach pupils more about Ghana’s history.

Do our current leaders provide a good example of selfless governance and leadership that can be emulated by the future political leaders of our nation? I’m afraid not. Politics has now become a venture of amassing wealth for one’s self and their families at the expense of the poor citizens. We see our leaders living lavish lives; receiving fat salaries, riding in flashy cars, embarking on extravagant trips, and so on while looking on at the misery of Ghanaians. Even state lands and resources are being taken by some individuals we call our leaders.

Where is the love for one’s country and the dedication to serving the good people of Ghana? Political leadership is about service and sacrifice, not an avenue for acquiring wealth. If all leaders today will follow the steps of our forefathers, Ghana will be in a better place. Our economies will grow and the living conditions of the citizens will be improved.
