The Current Situation in Ghana
13.4% of Ghana’s working-age population is jobless, according to data from the 2021 Population and Housing Census provided by the Ghana Statistical Service. Only a small number of the thousands of students who graduate from Ghana’s numerous postsecondary schools each year find temporary or long-term work. This is enough to frighten students or even deter others from going to school.
It is upsetting to complete all of your coursework in the hopes of graduating from university with a decent career only to discover that “there are no jobs out here.” Graduates depend on their parents and friends more frequently as their responsibilities increase with age but their financial resources do not keep up with these demands. Some of these graduates have to borrow money from friends in order to eat; money that they may not even be able to repay since they are unsure of where their next meal will come from.
Truly, this encourages individuals to engage in all kinds of vices. Women can occasionally become reliant on wealthy men who offer them money in exchange for sex. Internet fraud and other cybercrimes become popular choices for the guys. Others relocate to prayer camps in order to seek God’s help. Well, this is a topic for another day’s conversation.
Some graduates have been home for over 10 years and counting yet are still jobless and doing menial jobs that pay out once every four months and over. What other options do these graduates have?
The Way Forward
The Government should give more focus on industrial growth. Educated Ghanaians should not seek opportunities in developed nations such as the US, the UK, and Canada leading to a mass exodus of talent from our country. Affluent Ghanaians should start industries here and provide employment opportunities to the educated talent to prevent brain drain in future.
