The date and location have been agreed on for your first date and you comfortably ask yourself, “What could possibly go wrong?” Everything! Well, unless you plan well enough. Going on first dates can make one pretty nervous. Whereas some try to rehearse lines, try on their outfits and plan for every possible thing, others just tell themselves, ‘What can come, can come’ and make no plans for anything. One thing that has been verified to work is being yourself. My people, trying to be like Rihanna or Barack Obama doesn’t work!

So it’s 6 pm and he’s honking at your gate, but you’re now going to bath. Or the other way round, you agreed on 6 pm, she’s ready for you yet you’re now heading home after a meeting to go and shower. How unimpressive! In preparing for any events, unforeseen circumstances and delays are not new, so “communicate”. Let the other person in on impromptu schedules, unregistered delays and many more. That way, beautiful first impressions are made.

Now, I don’t know who advised several men on this, but using big vocabs that make the lady say ‘pardon?’ all the time is a turn-off. We know you read the entire Longman Dictionary in primary 6 but please, be simple. Why use ‘exhilarated’ when ‘happy’ and ‘pleased’ are available? First dates are meant for relaxing discussions about each other. Why so serious?

Also, inasmuch as mummy is pressuring you to bring that special person home, avoid bringing up the topic of marriage on the first date. It turns some people off.  The impression you give them is ‘oh, she’s desperate’. Same thing happens when you begin asking overly sensitive questions despite spotting some discomfort on the other side. First dates are meant to be enjoyed. It’s not a competitive ground where we think of how best and fast we can achieve our desires.

In all, so much goes into creating the right and perfect picture on our first dates. Yes, there are embarrassing moments such as spilling the drink or soiling your dress. But see, the key here is how you’re able to manoeuvre your way around these moments.

The first impressions on the first dates can be a deciding factor on whether there would be a second date. Will the other party be eager to go on a second date with you? Well, that depends on the first date and impressions. Sit tight and let your people skills do the magic. Keep the convo going well enough and you may get to keep the person as well.
