The newest artist to fall in love with Nigerian musician Wizkid’s blockbuster song “Essence” is American rapper Kanye West.
Kanye West claims that the song, which was released in October 2020, is the greatest song ever. With his millions of followers on Instagram, Kanye posted a screenshot of the song’s cover art.
The post Kanye west made about Wizkid’s Essence ft Tems has accumulated over 1 million likes and 30K comments in a day compared to all his other posts. That’s to show how the world has accepted afrobeats and endorsed Wizkid as a major Afrobeats frontliner.
His post got many people reacting including model and friend of Wizkid, Naomi Campbell. “Yes !!!! Thank You @kanyewest @wizkidayo @tems ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥🇳🇬🙌🏾🙌🏾,” she wrote.
After the Made In Lagos album was released, the song “Essence” with Nigerian singer/songwriter Tems became a worldwide hit.
Later, the song had a remix with pop sensation Justin Bieber and was hailed as one of the summertime songs of 2021.
The remix was released, charted for 35 weeks, and peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. The song debuted at number one, spent 23 weeks at the top of the Billboard Afrobeats Chart, and is presently at number three.
The song achieved two platinum records in the USA. Wizkid and Tems became the first African artists to ever win a significant BET award category when “Essence” was named “Best Collaboration” at the 2020 BET Awards.
In the meantime, “Made In Lagos” has received a gold certification in the USA (USA).
After more than 500,000 copies of the album were sold in the US, the Certification was announced by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on August 29. Wizkid, real name Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, is the first musician from Africa to have a record awarded the RIAA Gold certification
