Nana Aba Anamoah, Manager of GH One Tv, in a recent tweet has told a Member of Parliament to respect the intelligence of Ghanaians in seeking to justify a decision made by the government to seek support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), due to an economic crackdown.
Frank Annoh-Dompreh, MP for Adoagyiri Nsawam tweeted quite a lot on July 2nd in relation to how countries have approached the IMF for support.
He referenced a CNN article dated earlier in 2020 that captioned: “IMF says half of the world has asked for a bailout”.
“Half of the world is asking for assistance from the IMF, this is not peculiar to just Ghana. Interesting read!”, he tweeted.
His posts are in line with the official government narrative that the economic crisis the country is struggling with is a result of the twin crisis of Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Among the many people who reacted to the post by means of comments or shared their views by retweeting the post was Nana Aba Anamoah.
She retweeted, “You’re posting an April 2020 story in July 2022 to justify a decision that’s caught the ire of Ghanaians?”
“Here are two things you should do;
1. Respect the intelligence of Ghanaians
2. Repeat 1 “
To which the MP responded with, ” I am not ‘justifying’ the decision, far from that, I am telling you that the situation is certainly global and we have to appreciate it better from that point of view.
The global aspect cannot and should not be discounted, regardless. “
On July 1st, 2022, the Government embarked on formal engagements with IMF contrary to its earlier position of not returning to the Fund. This decision has since then, caused a public dividend.
The government has consistently blamed its backtracks from its earlier stance on the IMF, on the twin crisis of Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war.
