Many workers in Ghana rely on vehicles, be it commercial or personal to commute to their places of work and back to their homes. But what happens when the roads that these workers ply are blocked for one reason or the other?
The case of the recent heavy vehicular traffic along the Accra-Tema Highway is a fitting answer to this question. The traffic situation is caused by ongoing rehabilitation works by the Ghana Highway Authority on one structurally defected bridge on that highway.
This move is proactive of the Authority as it moved to fix an issue before giving it a chance to become a crisis situation. The question here is “at what cost?” How much did employers and other workers lose as a result of lateness to work and absenteeism? What impact has the traffic had on productivity in the country? Could it be that the timing of the rehabilitation works was bad and not well planned?
Whatever the answer to these questions may be, Ghana, as a country should grow to the point where renovation works would not impact productivity especially when the nation is experiencing an economic downturn.
