Some students have accused some teachers at Benkum Senior High School (SHS) in the Eastern Region of engaging in sexual activity with them.
The sexual encounter between a student and one of the teachers was captured on camera, and it has already leaked, creating stress in the typically tranquil school setting.
Others involved in the affair have begun speaking out due to mistrust and displays of power. Three teachers were allegedly implicated in the scandal.
The Akropong Police Command has been notified of the incident, and an investigation is proceeding.
The English teacher, one of the teachers implicated, had his or her income stopped when the Akuapem North District and Eastern Regional Education Office formed a committee to look into the situation.
When approached, Isaac Bannie, one of the teachers who was reportedly engaged, denied any involvement. He said that he was actually the student’s family and not a friend.
Officials at the Police command and the Office of Education verified the scandal.
Mr. Nyarkoh, the school’s headmaster, disclosed that an investigation is being conducted.
The English instructor, Emmanuel Darkoh Mensah, is rumoured to have expressed regret to the authorities for the scandal at this time. He is now concerned about death threats after the incident.
A Troubling Canker in Our Schools
A similar circumstance occurred earlier this year at Bole Senior High School, where Issahaku Jeddah, the assistant headmaster at the Savanna region school, got into hot water for reportedly raping a 21-year-old final-year student.
The victim claims that the assistant headmaster called her in his office during prep hours, but when she arrived at Issahaku’s office that evening, something unexpected occurred.
Even at the Junior High level, such cases are not absent. A case in point is when Mr. Nketsiah, the headmaster of Set ‘A’ Junior High School in Offinso, who is forty-three (43) years old, was detained for attempting to defile a fifteen (15) year old student. When some young men from the neighbourhood rushed his apartment on the grounds that he was trying to get the poor girl laid, the headmaster is alleged to have at first denied taking the teenage girl into his room.
According to reports, Mr. Nketsiah used the promise of helping her do well on her final exam to get the girl into his room. The final-year student, who will not be named, reported to the police that Mr. Nketsiah has harassed her since her first year of high school.
The teenage girl is believed to be heavily endowed at the backside, which the 43-year-old headmaster found irresistible. The adolescent girl revealed that the headmaster had been bugging her till she gave in and went to visit him in his room.
The matter is troubling as it has become endemic in the Ghanaian school system from the Junior High level to the tertiary level. The question that one may ask is, “Are these acts a result of a breakdown in the morality of the youth or a case of coercion and show of power on the side of the teachers?”
Parents cannot send their children to school with the hope that these children will be receiving quality education in safe environments only for these children to be sexually harassed by the very people in whose hands they were committed for protection. This is just not right and action must be taken to rid schools of these sexual predators.
